La Réunion-based label Nomad Roots Records is delighted to announce the signing of Gaïa Elsey, a new artist from the island. We’re delighted to present her very first single, Lisez-moi, which is the first extract from her forthcoming album due for release at the end of 2024. Lisez-moi’ is much more than just a song; it’s an invitation to travel from singer Gaïa Elsey. Hard to classify, this first single is an ode to dreams, freedom and the sweetness of living without borders. Its release, symbolically scheduled for May 10, the national day of remembrance of the slave trade, slavery and their abolition, is of particular importance for the island of La Réunion, the birthplace of this artist whose multi-colored, multi-faceted talents have been shaped by her many travels.
With its haunting Touareg blues accents in Creole, ‘Lisez-moi’ was inspired by a dream of a boat on the Nile, caught in a storm. Gaïa Elsey and keyboardist Lise Van Dooren find refuge and comfort in books, in a whirlwind of wind and sandy mist.
The song was born “as a matter of course”, from a heady bass riff, after a discussion about dreams during an artistic residency. A period which catalyzed the energies and friendship of a high-performance musical team, in the service of the creation of an album entitled Volcan, to be released at the end of the year.
This is Gaïa Elsey’s first project under her own name, having returned to her native island a year ago, after crossing borders with other musical adventures.
