A documentary film on Hasna El Bacharia at Festival d’Afrique in Montreal
A documentary film on the artist Hasna El Bacharia, entitled “The Rocker of the Desert” will be previewed in Montreal (Canada) next Thursday at the festival Vues d’Afrique and next Saturday in Sherbrooke also in Canada, at the festival Cinema World, according to the director Algerian-Canadian, Sara Nacer.
“The Rocker of the desert” lasting 1h 15min, shot and developed over a period of almost ten (10) years, is an intimate and deep portrait of Hasna El Bacharia, a pioneer of Diwane artists, “said the APS, the young filmmaker who currently lives in Canada.
Hasna El Bacharia is “the first musician to break the social barriers of this culture, she is an example for women and inspires them by reappropriating a musical genre traditionally reserved for men.
She is a singular artist who leads women to redefine their roles and challenge cultural norms, while being a musical performance,” she said.
“I am very happy to finally unveil this film shot between 2013 and 2018. Hasna El Becharia, is a national legend, an extraordinary woman who deserves to be celebrated in her lifetime,” said Sara Nacer. For this filmmaker, “Hasna El Becharia, pioneer of the Diwane in the feminine, is the living heiress of an art that is part of the ancestral Algerian heritage and of which we must all be proud.
Speaking about her long years of work on the documentary film, the director said it took him ten (10) years of shooting, in Algeria, including Bechar, Europe and Canada, for the realization of the work that also traces 20 years of archives of Hasna El Bacharia. “This film, the first of its kind devoted to the first woman to play with virtuosity the Guembri, the only instrument of music and dance Diwane, and reserved only for men (Maâlem), traces the geographical, social and cultural path of Hasna El Bacharia, “said the director.
According to her, the documentary film is “without doubt a significant contribution to a better knowledge of the artistic work Hasna. It was also to “make known the musical genre Diwane which is one of the most important of the national cultural heritage,” she concluded. The young filmmaker, Sara Nacer, has made several documentaries in Montreal for which she has managed to win awards.
